In the arid heart of Chad’s Ennedi Cultural Reserve, the critically endangered addax is returning to a land it once called home. Shaped by wind and time, this landscape of sandstone arches, hidden oases, and ancient rock art holds stories older than memory. Built for the desert, the addax now face a new challenge: survival in a world reshaped by human presence and shifting climates. Though Chad is often seen from afar as a land of conflict, I found generosity among nomadic communities who welcomed me under vast, star-filled skies. Here, in this remote corner of the Sahara, rewilding is not just about saving a species, it’s about restoring the bond between people, place, and the wild.
